It isn't just "manufactured consensus" that drive these people, it is manufactured moral virtue that does. This is why they react so strongly to apparent apostates, why they attack the outgroup with moral slander, and why they don't care about results, or trade offs. "We're the good people, who care, and you aren't, you NAZI!" is about the extent of the conversation. Just look at any of the "debate me" videos out there, or interactions with "no Kings" protesters, it is all about how virtuous they are, and how evil the enemy is.
