Yes, that's pretty much the case.

I would compare it to the portrayal of Ben Shapiro as the biggest alt-right person ever during the pre-trump years despite the fact that he's considered a lame duck at best if not outright controlled opposition by much of the right wing factions that have some population on this site, or to people using that one GGrevolt guy (Not Ethan Ralph) who got arrested for revenge porn as the face of the entirety of the Gamergate movement despite the fact that he hates gamers.

I do see some people discussing fears about Gen Alpha still looking up to Tate as an icon, but I feel that warrants it's own post.
