I say in the first Mass Effect, any romance you have with Kaiden or Ashley should have ended disastrously at Virmire. Either because you didn't rescue your love interest, in which case they die, or you do and highlight precisely why a captain should not be fucking around with his subordinates, prompting the survivor to break up with you once their guilt kicks in. It would have highlighted that this is not the kind of story or setting where that kind of behavior is acceptable, and better yet, turned off the kind of "gamers" who obsess over that shit, and kept them from buying the sequels (and subsequently infecting them). But of course, Bioware's writers would never do anything to alienate them. Or seriously think about the ramifications of a commanding officer having an affair with members of the crew.
