That is not hyperbole. The accusations were entirely false. The originator of the "claim" explicitly stated that the ground penetrating radar couldn't confirm that there were any mass graves, and only wanted further research done. Leftist organizations utilized this to attack churches across Canada. The purpose of the attacks was explicitly to attack Catholics as a group. They attacked Catholics in general in hate crimes by Canadian law. Antifa explicitly vandalized Catholic building organizations in the US, and wrote on the building it would be a "long hot summer" for Catholics. The police did little more than claim they would try to investigate. The Catholic Church, as it has repeatedly ignored terrorist attacks in Europe, also ignored terrorist attacks in Canada. Terrorists had their identities concealed by the CBC. The CBC refused to release information about the attackers and even censored video of the faces of the attackers. "Civil Rights" leaders in the country explicitly supported the mass burning of Catholic churches. Many government officials expressed sympathy with the terror campaign and the burning of churches. Every single person who ever attended a school in a reservation was re-branded a "survivor" by the media. All of this took place during the Canadian Lockdowns, where many churches were intentionally forced to close, even in the event that people met inside their cars.
