Yeah, when people think about 'South America' it's usually actually the central americas they're thinking of, they don't understand how many countries there are out there which just quietly chug along and look at the west like they're insane.

Edit: Also, regarding conformity, yes and no, the conformists are the majority here, so they're pretty vocal about it, but I will grant you there is some degree of unwritten rules regarding who you're 'allowed' to speak well of and support in public.
