There are, however, a TON of AK airsoft guns without side rails available. If he had a legit AK made without the side rail it'd be decades old and significantly more worn than what he has.

Plastic AK magazines exist but are terrible, and if someone in the UK has a smuggled-in AK they would probably have come from somewhere providing them with steel AKs since they're the most common, durable, and would be found in the same place. And you can clearly tell a plastic AK magazine, they aren't designed like that. The next closest is bakelite mags but that's obviously not one either.
