Their main problem is that the last command God personally gave them was to repent and follow Yeshua Masirach. Most refused, and that refusal has been a millstone around their neck for two millennia. They have been living in a state of rebellion ever since, and that has left them totally open to the lies of the Enemy. All of their love for money, power, influence, and control stems from Satan successfully whispering in their ears that they can and should be masters of their own fate. Even their rules-lawyering approach to religion is a testament to their choosing the wrong path. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4-7. Trying to find a way to get away with doing something God told you not to do by trying to find some technicality that let's you do the opposite of the spirit of the commandment isn't loving God with all your heart. It's spite.

Satan doesn't even mind if they still go through the motions of worshipping Adonai, as Satan is well aware that only through Jesus can they truly be redeemed and safeguarded from Satan. So long as their answer to God's last direct command is no, they will continue to futilely struggle to protect and advance themselves alone, not knowing that it can never work. They must accept the Messiah. It is the only way to fix them, same as the rest of us.
