My interpretation is that they probably are married on paper at the end, if for no other reason than to avoid would be suiters aiming for corporate mergers and to fulfill the terms of the contest. But I don't think it's really a romantic relationship. It's a marriage of convenience between best friends. There IS something there besides best friendship, but it comes off as a princess-and-knight kind of loyalty and protectiveness. Is friendship + duty + legal recognition enough to be technically gay?
