Same in Hawaii with that wildfire that burned down a whole town. Over 1100 people 'missing' of course many died, but they wouldn't let families in to even try and confirm their missing kid's bodies. I'm not sure if they have yet. No alarm. No emergency broadcast on local TVs. They wouldn't even release the water needed to fight the fire, because it needed to be weighed against some notion of 'stealing indigenous waters', fighting past injustices.
*edit to add that police blocked off the exits in and out of the island town, even directing people fleeing to go back towards the fire. Only the fleeing people that ignored the blockades survived, aside from a few who fled out into the ocean, and didn't drown from exhaustion or fumes.
