I'm sure this sort of thing has happened throughout history but my favorite example is Jim Jones. He was basically a lifelong atheist but realized he could weaponize the church to his ends. It seems like a whole lot of churches these days has been infiltrated by this sort of person. The last time I was active in a church they had a huge emphasis on "racial reconciliation" in a lot of sermons, that was enough for me. Edit: Jim Jones not George lmao.
