They want a holiday to mark the ending of slavery. The 13th Amendment passed on December 6th. They figured with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years another December holiday would be seen as less important. So they took a regional holiday that was considered black and incorporated into an overreaching celebration of the end of slavery/being black.
This is my problem, celebrating the end of slavery is in my opinion a fine occasion to celebrate. But it's not based on any actual history, it's all about optics and pretend things. It's all just empty virtue signaling
