Edit to add: This is simply what they don’t get though. They think that masculinity and femininity are achieved by checking off enough boxes on a list. Not every woman wears a dress, has long hair, cares to wear makeup, carries a purse, drinks rosé, whatever other check-boxes you want to add. Women are women no matter what; a man who does do all those things is still a man. I thought we covered this in the 70s or so: there is no one single way to be either a man or a woman, each can follow or not follow the stereotypical markers of their gender to whatever extent their personalities and tastes dictate. That’s true liberation, to recognize that. We had it, and then these fuckers showed up and took us backward and sideways: sideways in that “you can switch though!” and backward in that gender is now a checklist you ought to follow again rather than a happenstance that shouldn’t limit you.
