Matthews, a former member of the CIA, advised the production on the depiction of spying. Based on historic Soviet sexpionage and contemporary Russian use of kompromat, filming took place in Hungary, Slovakia and Austria.
I'm not pro- or anti-Russia, so hopefully it's not taken as a direct analogy, it's just the form of the movie that has a familiar ring in Adam's current personal lore.

He was squawking pretty loudly before his marriage with pro-freedom views and that abruptly stopped because he "fell in love with his soul mate." During his marriage his views dipped nearly into authoritarian territory and he was de facto forced to take the jab because of a trip to Greece, presumably for and with his then-wife. Now he's been cheated on and is getting or is divorced. His views are normalizing slowly but I doubt he's going to accept that maybe his relationship wasn't quite as pure as it seemed.
Aint sayin it's a direct 1:1 correlation with the movie synapsis, but a quick search and direct comparison of their looks, age, histories and views tells me that it wasn't because she had the hots for him. She was already independently wealthy beforehand from modeling so one could take gold-digging off the table, so then why cheat? Was it mere run-o-the-mill hypergamy or was her target neutralized and it's time to move on to the next? I'm simplifying beyond realistic terms, but his storyline is quite odd to me so speculation will occur until better alternatives arise.
I quick searched for who she cheated on him with and, lo and behold, another notable freedom squawker: Andrew Tate. Good luck to him, I guess.
