How did Gallup define "liberal" for the purposes of the poll?

The word is useless as a descriptor for one's politics. I'm more concerned about values. For example, someone's stance on abortion will be much more instructive than whether they're "liberal." An issue like that gets right to the core of what someone's views on autonomy and personhood are, which then filter through into their politics.
