Let's go into it.
Children used to be a benefit as they could work the land you own. They no longer are, because most people are not farmers.
Having a wife used to be necessary when appliances didn't exist and everything had to be done by hand. Now I can just throw a Roomba down and put my clothes in the washing machine, and despite the cost of electricity, still save a ton of money over having that extra dependent.
