The people who wrote 2A would have been suffering from a severe lack of imagination if they couldn't conceive of modern assault rifles. The Continental Congress investigated procuring Belton flintlocks for the entire army. Belton claimed his rifles were capable of firing up to twenty rounds in rapid succession with a single trigger pull.
The Austrian army at the time was outfitted with Girardoni air rifles, and one would be carried by Lewis and Clarke across the continent. The Girardoni had a twenty round tubular magazine under the barrel that fed rounds by pointing the rifle upwards and pressing a button. A full twenty rounds could be reloaded in seconds from additional tubes that were dumped into the front of the magazine.
While the actual mechanics would be difficult to work out, it takes little imagination to think of a rifle that could fire as rapidly as the Belton with the reloading speed of a Girardoni.
