It's complicated. Try to look at it like this. The left-wings of today used to be the anti-government types of yesterday. You go to an antifa rally or many left-wing rallies and you'll find a lot of anarchist. Left-wing anarchists. If you discuss communism on reddit, you'll have left-wing communists tell you that the ideal communist state is actually one without a state at all. Why is that?

Basically, it's not about government, taxes, social services, etc... What it's about is POWER. Look at it from a power lens. When the institutions in society are promoting left-wing ideology then these institutions are good, such as the government or military or whatever so left-wingers will often take a pro-institution stance. The second though that any of these institutions do not promote the left-wing ideology and promote right-wing ideology then these institutions are bad and the left becomes anti-institutions.

What differentiates the left from the right? Many think it's freedom or morality or whatever. What it truly is at the core though is equality vs. inequality. The left-wing believes that all people are equal so if there exists any difference in outcome between people then this is due to inherent oppression in society. Thus whoever has more most be suppressed in order to elevate whoever has less in order to achieve equality and thus "justice". In order to accomplish this sort of redistribution to achieve equality you often need a strong force that is capable of suppressing individuals who have advantage over other individuals. This is why the left tends to gravitate toward more government and more collectivism because the government and collective are the forces used to oppress individuals in order to achieve equality. The left ultimately believe that the optimal society is one where everyone is entirely equal in all regards. However, the left thinks that this "equality" is the natural state of humanity and the only reason we have inequality is because of "capitalism" or "white supremacy" or basically because powerful men have oppressed less powerful people for thousands of years it has created imbalance and thus we need a strong force to promote equality for centuries until the natural state of humanity is entirely equal because we've removed any remnants of the oppression that occurred in the past which led to inequality. Basically, the left wants everyone to be identical robots more or less but then thinks all physical and behaviors differences in their perfect utopia wouldn't actually lead to any difference in outcome once our previous conceptions of life are forced out of us and we let go of our white supremacist tendencies.

The right on the other hand believes in inequality. The right believes no 2 people are equal and thus the existence of equality is actually proof of oppression. Equality means that someone superior is being oppressed in order to unjustly elevate someone who is inferior. The right ultimately believes that the optimal society is one in which there exists a hierarchy and those individuals most superior are at the top while those individuals most inferior are at the bottom. Since the right believes this to be objectively the natural structure of humanity, the right believes that having less collective forces (government) at play, the more this natural hierarchy will be met. The only way equality exists in the world is by large groups oppressing superior individuals in order to elevate inferior individuals. This is why the right is often highly against government and also pro individualism and pro decentralization. The right believes that the more people are pitted against other people on an individual basis, the more each person's outcome in life will be based on the natural hierarchy among people and thus true "justice" will be achieved in society. People's station in life will ultimately be what they deserve based on who they are as an individual. This is why the right often points to IQ differences, racial differences, aesthetics, work-ethic, gender differences, skills/competence, etc... Because these indicate that there exists actual real differences and thus equality is inherently oppressive. The left on the other hand contends that these differences only exist due to inherent oppression in the system and due to the thousands of years leg-up those with power had over those without so the left wishes to undo all our differences since any difference is inherently oppressive.

This is more or less the major difference between the two groups.
