Agriculture stopped being a growth market in the early 20th century and this was choking the world economy.

You realize the STAGGERING amount of subsidies that go into agriculture, right?

We're in the same situation today where there's little room for industry to grow and competition is becoming cancerous.

The reason there is "very little room for industry to grow" because the amount of government regulations strangulates anyone out that can't afford to have everything done overseas. Regulations which, funny enough, are promoted by existing corporations.

The simple solution would be a shorter workweek, like the very socialist 40 hour workweek we already have.

No, the solution would be to start cutting back the amount of regulations. Governments mucking around in the economy is what made The Great Depression last as long as it did. It's pretty much agreed upon by histories and economists alike that the government ended up extending it. Yes, there will be some growing pains, but being able to finally run outweighs the pain of not having been able to use your legs for decades.
