America was an imperialist country only around the turn of the 20th century. But even the Phillipines were then rather quickly put on the path to independence, even before WWII that broke the imperialism (and the Japs went to the war with the stated purpose to do just that, and "liberate" Asia and Pacific from the white empires).
Meanwhile the Soviets recreated the fallen Russian Empire as best as they could (some "globohoms" resisted them successfully, but the Ukrainian ones failed) and just renamed it, and their empire survived all the others, falling only in 1991. Now the proudly self identified Chekists that are ruling Moscow want to restore it again.
