The nice thing about learning history is, you read enough and you start to see that the only things that change are the names and technology. All the motivations and foibles, vices, and virtues that our leaders and decisionmakers have today are the same ones they had a century ago, two and a half-centuries ago, a millennium, two millennia, and even further back.
Oh sure, we happen to know more, (and there's something to be said for the benefits to intelligence decades of stable food supplies have given us) but the same things drive us as what drove our ancestors back in the middle ages. We aren't any more "Enlightened" today than they were.
