Fact checkers were quick to shoot down the claims despite having to admit that the CDC did indeed patent the novel coronavirus, but their excuse was so that they could prevent others from commercializing it or profiting from vaccines. What did they use to debunk his claims? They quoted the CDC who denied that there was anything nefarious going on.
It's like asking a mafia boss if a paper trail showing a list of illicit activity to his crime syndicate is true, and he says "No, it's not true. We weren't doing it for criminal purposes, it was to protect rackets from other mobsters."
The congressional hearings also basically brought out that the virus was man-made and a variant did come from the Wuhan lab in China, which funnily enough resulted in a bunch of fact checkers retroactively changing their articles about the virus leak being a conspiracy theory.
