Complacency. In many ways conservatives are living in a fantasy. They've been so well entertained and so well fed for so long they don't actually believe anything can really change. They have allowed their culture to erode away around them. Even the ones who complain about libtards or whatever still, more often than not, believe in the superiority of America, and believe that somehow, inexplicably, we inevitably will come from behind and win in the 11th hour, and thus there is no real danger.
Another aspect is that they themselves have been slowboiled. They value their comforts more than anything else. They don't fully accept the progressive ideals, but they have internalized some without realizing it. Most American conservative men don't realize their own worth, and allow their daughters and wives to lord over them and insult them, like that should somehow be normal and the men should just grin and bear it. They have also been cowed out of advocating for real, independent values. Among gun owners, it's popular to argue over gun violence statistics, saying guns make society safer. When really, the argument should go no further than "you have no right to take it. 100,000 could die a year and you'd still have no right to take it. Freedom is worth more than safety." Safety is not the ultimate virtue, and to allow it to be treated as such opens the door to all kinds of fascist overreach.
But they can't say that, because our society has truly shifted to see safety as more important than freedom. Even conservatives have accepted the basic virtues of the left. This is a deep, underlying cultural shift which undercuts and weakens every traditional argument. It goes beyond democrat or republican. We can't use our real arguments, because they sound appalling to people who have been raised to value authority and safety over independence. So we have to play these statistical games and try to argue in the framework of the progs.
