I agree, we've gone from frontier/agrarian, to industrial, and now to a technological country. Sadly the effects of a technological country on culture with it's centralizing cities and broad geographic footprints seem to create a culture and acceptance and celebration of authoritarian beliefs and people. Maybe it's human nature and technology is amplifying the innate power of the state and it's supporters, maybe it's something else.
I don't think history will be returning anytime soon though. Too much money, power, and technology is tied up in this weird driftless world. Too many disparate actors and organizations that rely on the post-Cold War era for money and influence to allow it all to collapse, at least in our lifetimes.
I hope I'm wrong though. I hope China overplays their hand and gets caught up in an snafu in the Malacca Strait, resulting in a massive oil crunch in SE Asia, causing major economic and geopolitical waves for decades to come.
When that happens, I hope I'm sitting on my back porch overlooking acres of my land somewhere nice and warm and not too buggy.
