I agree with this 100% but there are pitfalls to be avoided. Part of the problem isn't that the left simply takes a side, they tend to go all in. These people are true believers.
Punishing a single bad actor, guilty as they are, creates a martyr in the eyes of the rest of the movement. Instead of deterring wrong, they rally around the prosecuted and push to abolish crimes related to whatever they were punished for. This is how we get calls to disband police when a thug gets shot. The left can't resist letting good victimhood go to waste. They thrive on it.
So it's a little tricky. How do you discourage and prosecute without becoming a target, either immediately or down the road?
