Robert Barnes said it was good for a while. It probably started to fall apart as Civil Rights were being implemented fully. Less and less cases for them and they lost their purpose. It's a similar reason why the left keeps making all these problems; there wasn't much to fix, so they started breaking things so they could "fix" them.
Was it really, or were we just more naive and ignorant in the past and don't want to admit our failings?
Every few years they get one right to maintain the facade.

The ACLU used to be a principled agency. Not only did it defend civil rights defenders, but it also defended the KKK and other crazies as well.
Not anymore. It has no principles anymore.
