Is this real? I searched and can't find it.
edit: in this tweet and I guess though a variant it is officially from DC?

The delusion of so many. Instead of striving to be better, they yearn to tear everything down and seek the lowest common denominator.
They don't always follow 1984.
Sometimes they follow Harrison Bergeron
I think this has manifested in the "just love yourself / be yourself" advice that we give to young people. I've hated the advice for a while because I knew I was fucked up. I even got into an argument with someone who wanted to make me feel better and said that, I responded by saying, "No, you don't understand. What if I'm what needs to change?!!"
Looking back on it now, yeah, I had problems with self-image, but it was also introspection. It seems to me that people fought to avoid introspection. As if having a poor self-image and introspection were one and the same. It got to the point where I had to advocate for the concept of shame itself.
Nihilistic Hedonism: a deadly combination to be spoon-feeding kids.
You nailed a number of critical points I absolutely agree with. Well done.
edit: rewritten
Well, at least I got there.
I meant it sincerely. I can see now how it read(now edited). I only meant, as I'm likely much older, I too evolved to those same conclusions over time. And that self-introspection IS YUGE in the difference between asshats that continuously fuckup vs. those that evolve and get better.
Hooray for narcissism.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's important to like yourself if you ever want anybody else to like you. But liking oneself doesn't mean one is perfect and should stop striving to be better. Loving oneself is just fucked up otoh.
Agreed, but the problem is that society seemed to accept "love yourself' as a principle. That's not at all a good thing.
Put like this: this is the mentality that is being disseminated to the population
It starts with a singer saying "I'm the boss. No rules apply. Hallelujah, better testify." It's a very aggressive kind of "Fuck you, I'm fat, I'm awesome, fuck you for even thinking you have the right to judge me. I love myself and that's all that ever matters."
The advice is supposed to stem from "don't just try to be someone else so that you fit in better", but it's horrifically morphed into "narcissism is empowering, everyone who disagrees should be mocked."
I always thought of it as "Be someone you like" as in: If you don't like aspects of yourself, try to change them to te better if you can. I'm rather sure that most of the 'love yourself' types don't really even like themselves.
