The advice is supposed to stem from "don't just try to be someone else so that you fit in better"

I always thought of it as "Be someone you like" as in: If you don't like aspects of yourself, try to change them to te better if you can. I'm rather sure that most of the 'love yourself' types don't really even like themselves.
