I wonder if people who fanatically defend Trump's first term are now rethinking, seeing what is possible
I don't even know what you mean by this or who you're talking about except that you, clearly, think you're smarter than those people.
I'll defend Trump's first term as better than any other president in my lifetime despite what happened. Is that fanatical? I'll defend Trump's naivete in dealing with the swamp because I also shared that naivete -- I'd have tried to work with them in a magnanimous way too. Is that fanatical? I'll defend Trump's misplaced trust in the pharma companies because there was no way most reasonable people would have predicted that they would have lied about absolutely everything and instead produced a literal depopulation weapon, or that the next administration would go full lockdown-jab-mandate-authoritarian.
Does any of that make me a fanatic?
What's happening now is beyond any of my tempered expectations.
Smart has nothing to do with it. Also, I'm not even smart enough to watch Rick and Morty.

I'd actually agree with that, but that's a remarkably low bar. Also, please note that I'm talking about his administration, not about his actions.

Not at all. But you might be misunderstanding my argument. It's not "trump sux cheeto voldemort didnu niffin in his first term". It's that his first administration didn't do much good policy-wise, except standard GOP stuff like taxes and regulation.
What's happening now is beyond any of my tempered expectations.
Hey, we agree about something. What is happening now is beyond my wildest expectations, though it's a shame Matt Gaetz didn't make it.
