It's not a new strategy, but it's probably back in fashion. I remember old MSM news interviews with Republicans who said they regretted voting for presidents as far back as Reagan. And of course it was always over a single issue.

Trump's first term was filled with "Republicans" who were constantly regretting him because despite giving them everything they wanted he was so gosh darn mean, especially to women.
