Imagine being a traitor and then trying to sabotage your successor because he isn't one, or at least is less of one.
Since Merz’s comeback in 2022, he has shifted the party significantly to the right, in many ways undoing Merkel’s centrist legacy — particularly when it comes to the issue of migration.
Don't you love how open borders is 'centrist' and anything else is 'far-right'?
If he is, that might be an indication some of Trump's action's have hit a marl abd they want to have a low profile by have some that at least makes a slight effort to reduce immigration to lay low for a while before flooding Europe again.
That or they're worried AFD will landslide and remove all their puppets.
He isn't and will not make any effort whatsoever. It's all just a show to try to prevent the AfD from getting enough votes to become a real problem for them.
Ah so a repeat of what the Conservatives tried to do nearly a decade ago to halt the rise of UKIP by promising a EU referendum not thinking the people would ACTUALLY vote to leave..
Let's hope it backfires the same way it did in 2016 for them.
To add to this: ANYONE still in higher positions in the CDU are very pro Merkel, the ones that weren't have been forced out of the party over a decade ago... A lot of them are now in the Afd. Merkel has damaged the party and the party's identity for many more decades to come.

He isn't an 'immigration hawk'. It's just election talk bullshit. He's a BlackRock puppet.

Did it backfire? The UKs situation has only gotten worse since the referendum. Immigration increased as far as I know.
I firmly believe that if the UK didn't leave the EU, Europe would be in a WORSE situation than it currently is.
That one act acted as slow moving poison and slowed down it's expansion considerably.
If you're only focusing on immigration, I believe that was retaliation by the UK establishment for not voting the way THEY insisted.
Unfortunately, that is not in the cards.
But fortunately, any AfD gain will lead to them panicking mightily.

Merkel gonna Merkel.
