Tbf it's just another word for for something that already has a lot of words that can be used for it, and I'll bet you there are alternatives that would be considered both better and worse at the same time were you to ask someone. If you do find yourself in that conversation somehow, ask the other person their opinion on the term "gash".

I learned English in Scotland, so I always figured that was half of it. The other half is it was used as I described in a very specific part of Idaho.
