It's not that they don't care it's that they think they're better/smarter than them.

It's a party run by goodie-two-shoes teachers pets who have spent their entire life sucking up to self-righteous, pretentious champagne socialist college professors because those professors are cool and bohemian and did ayhuasca with Derrida or had an orgy with Foucault and now they understand the human condition in a way that nobody else does so obviously they should be the ones in charge.
