Suburban houses in NA are really great, even 'poor people' have great homes. But are the apartments really that big?
From my personal experience, a similar apartment to mine costs 3 times as much in a not-NYC US city. God knows how they manage it, housing is a disaster where I live. So I think it's just "they can pay more so let's charge them more", like with the tickets.
I'm not being chauvinistic when I say that I'd rather live here than there, at least if these were the only considerations.
It varies wildly based on location, but you can get really large apartments with 10 foot ceilings for reasonable rent in America. My last place in the city had a massive balcony too. In the suburbs they'll often have attached garages for a little extra rent.
