Are they looking for old copies of the original books?
The only ones still watching this show would eagerly burn any original copies they come across so that only "modern" versions could exist.
I bought a complete set of the Lord of the Rings + the Hobbit from a used bookstore recently. They were printed in the 70's, still had the box the four books slide into, though the foil decals are peeling. Only cost me $15 because there was a big promo sale.
I'd call that a score. I have books from disparate sets and was lucky to get them $5 each.
I've had my eye out for a deal on the Chronicles of Narnia from before they changed the book order, and have had no luck. I have a single book complete set, and a 90s-ish box set with the new "chronological" order, but finding an older box set is a bitch.
I suppose I should mention that it was a set of paperbacks. Still a good deal, I'd say.
I have a list of books that I always look for in 2nd hand book shops. Top of my list is the original Agatha Christie Ten Little Niggers. But there are some niches out there where you can flip books for a profit - for example. Beatrix Potter
Years ago at the same bookstore I remember seeing one of the Dr. Seuss books with the big lip african tribals. It was in a glass display case and was priced at like $70. Also in that case was a copy of Madonna's 'Sex' book and an old leatherbound edition of Mein Kamph. They don't have anything like that anymore...
I actually 'read' (well, looked at) Madonna's Sex book when it first came out. There was a copy in a shop and I knew the owner, so he let me take it out of its packet - and by today's standards its tame as fuck.
