It's one thing to go "Yes, we know how the actual story/history went, but we did the plot of our game this way because it's more fun," which is what Dynasty/Samurai Warriors did for years.
That method is okay.
Pretending this IS the actual story/history is NOT.
And really, that's how a lot of the early AC was. The historical portion was more of an easter egg for people who read codexs in games to enjoy how accurate it was, with the rest of it being their own original characters and storyline spanning it.
Then they got high on their own farts from people praising them for it, so it eventually they believed themselves they were reflecting actual history.
