Trying to mass censor user generated content in real time and not causing censorship of speech from outside the UK isn't going to work. The only way they could stop anything they dislike is to abolish social media and implement a new internal national network that is wholly controlled by the state for residential use. We've seen the UK police website being blocked to those outside the UK. In the future, it could be physically blocked (making VPN's useless) and only available within a UK Intranet. Which I think they will do in the long term.
An update to a previous post I made also mentioned in the link, the first arrest for "inaccurate information" was made to a prominent critic of the UK Government, someone who was critical of vaccine mandates, lockdowns and face masks - Bernie Spofforth. From what I understand, she is just the first of many who face arrest as these plans will now make social and communication networks legally mandated to report what the state deems to be dissent, lies and harm to law enforcement.
This law introduced by the Conservatives will bite them in the backside as it will be used against those creating electoral communications that are critical of the ruling Labour Party. It's going to be very difficult for anything critical of Labour to be published as anyone who does faces arrest.
Labour will also likely make VPN use outside of business and Government illegal. They attempted to push an amendment to the Online Safety Bill to this end but it failed. Now they have a large majority and a new opportunity to ban them for good.
Another thing that came about in the last couple of days, the renamed Counter Disinformation Unit who targeted those critical of Government during Covid-19, the National Security Online Information Team, are now targeting those critical of Government who are on the right wing.
TL;DR - the UK now has a literal Ministry of Truth.
It's probably why they're pushing the concept long term of a closed Intranet where the UK is isolated from the rest of the world. Not many countries have attempted that. North Korea's Kwangmyong is the well known one but places like Iran, Cuba and Russia have either tested or developing their own internal networks. Not exactly the countries the UK Government want to be associated with but we may be beyond the Rubicon now.
They don't have the infrastructure, resources or manpower to SUCCESSFULLY do it. The countries that can don't bother, the countries that attempt to do it like China, North Korea are suffering from so many internal issues that they are losing their power slowly.
The UK is in a WORSE position than China or any other examples, they don't have the military to withstand 2 weeks of a conflict and numbers aren't improving with a lack of recruits, infrastructure is DECADES behind and there is no reverence to authority. They're boiling the pot but the government doesn't realise THEY are the frog.
Sounds like the sort of thing you'd see in a Roadrunner/Tom and Jerry sketch with Wile E Coyote/Tom taking a saw to a tree branch both WEC/Tom and RR/Jerry are sitting on only for the camera to zoom out at the last moment when the branch is finally severed and reveal WEC/Tom was on the distal/far end of the branch the entire time.
Upvote because I need the hopium these days.
How are we going to hear or notice it?
