Isn't Mastadon essentially a decentralized Twitter clone in terms of functionality? That means it's useless for actual discussion and more focused on feeling important when your little blurb hits a lot of eyeballs.
Yep, it's default is 500 chars, but it is dependent on the server if it allows more chars.
