Not to give these jerks ammunition, but in Dragonball Z, at least the dub I watched on TV back in the day from whatever company did that, they did mention saiyan tribes a few times. Not much though. I had to assume by tribe they meant more or less a caste society. Warriors, craftsmen, statesmen, poets, etc. It was never really explained what was meant by tribes on the show. Just that there were tribes.
It later became the saiyan race once the planet was destroyed, and they stopped calling it a tribe at that point. My guess would be that it didn't really matter what tribe you were from if the planet you lived on didn't exist and neither did your tribe. You were all brothers in a nearly extinct race at that point. But I'm speculating.
I only have this info fresh in mind because I'm converting old recorded VHS tapes I did in the 90s for weekend cartoons to digitize them. And I'm checking the quality and what I have to edit, and hopefully make slightly better by running it through filter programs, because the VHS tapes are fading pretty quick, because I used shitty tapes and the extra long play that makes the quality even worse.
I was not a smart kid.
Tribes are traditionally hyperextended family units, united by blood, language, and culture. Bands within those tribes are basically bloodlines within the larger tribe ("Houses", in Shakespeare-speak.) Neighbouring tribes might have similar beliefs and language, but there will be differences that caused a tribal split sometime back in the distant past. That's how evolution works, those differences are the seeds of new subspecies (races) and eventually, species.
