I hate how it’s considered extreme to say that a country should determine immigration levels (based on what’s best for the country so not drastically messing with demographics) or that immigrants need to assimilate. Best examples are the ones who move to a western country and then whine about Christmas celebrations
A country doesn't even need to determine them. They should be constitutionally fixed to be lower than replacement levels of the citizen demographic. Low immigration is tolerable when they can't come in large enough numbers to create the miniature states within states as they do now. Without those they have to assimilate and can't derail the local culture. Anything higher is sabotage.
Before Hart-Cellar, immigration to America was fixed to maintain existing racial/ethnic demographics. Proponents of the bill, including the Jewish man who championed it for most of his life, promised that it would not be used to remake the demographics of the country. They were leftists and their lips were moving, so of course they were lying.
In other words: the very sensible and rational thing you suggest was status quo 60 years ago. They changed it on purpose in order to create the chaos we find ourselves in today. And when you look into it, yes, it turns out that “they” are precisely whom you expect.
Democrats.

and this was never voted on or decided by the citizens, it was just done to us.
