They are more accessible but the setup process somehow still manages to be dogshit depending on what distro you pick. For me it's either ultra basic Linux distro that works fine out of the box for very basic stuff then breaks if you attempt to do anything with it or a 'gaming' distro that breaks in the install process and fucks everything up. I hope this whole spying situation lights a fire under the autists and maybe gets some proper corpo backing for a real normie distro people can finally use.
I want to make the switch but I simply don't have the time right now with my projects to troubleshoot crap constantly :( If Microsoft increase their spying behaviour I could see even the money people potentially losing their temper with Microsoft and bankrolling some autists to make something that's actually good.

My fantasy is Tesla and Valve work together on a new general OS for the people. Actually Tesla likes telemetry and forced updates so let's leave it up to Valve.

We're already getting DIE purity testing in the OSS projects managed under Redhat/IBM. Just let computing for normies die, they clearly don't need it and make things worse for everyone.
I get it, I've already had the suggestions back when I bitched about Linux last time, the best thing is probably having two separate PCs. One Windows machine for basic stuff and gaming, then Linux for anything truly work related you want to keep secure. At least that way I can keep things separate and I don't have to worry about troubleshooting Linux on one PC as much.
Linux is never going to be a viable replacement for Windows unfortunately. I can't think of a pithy way to phrase it, but by it's nature it will never be coherent and reliable enough with a cohesive design such that it can take the place of Windows. It's simply a byproduct of its nature as an open source OS. At best it can be a stop-gap for dedicated autists looking to escape the Microsoft environment but it will never reach the point where it's going to be a functional replacement for the Windows desktop.
Linux as an escape hatch is outright cope and willful denial of reality.
If the Linux community banded together the same way they have around Blender they could make something amazing. However as it stands there's far too much trooning and Leftist infiltration going on which is likely by design. Even Godot is still doing a better job than the Linux community and they've had their own bits of drama involving sperging leftists.
You're highlighting my point by lamenting the need to herd the cats into achieving anything meaningful. Linux will continue to be what it always was and not what people wish it could become.
I liked Mint, very Windows XP feel, getting games to even run on it was a bitch though and I didn't even know if I had anything installed correctly in typical Linux fashion half the time.

Valve also likes telemetry AKA spying plus forced updates.
The Steam Deck already runs on Linux...
All we need is a compatible PC OS, and we're there.
Oh god yes

my distro just updated from plasma5 to plasma6. suddenly all the file-manager shortcuts were changed.
from a simple f10 to make a new folder to the shitty windows 3-button shortcut.
linux is already on it's way to become as user-unfriendly and shit as windows.
Mint.
