My rant has nothing to do with you in particular m0r1arty my mind just gets absolutely blown by this level of dev incompetence. This seems to be a bit of a thing with itch as well where they simply don't bother re-uploading their latest project files to the site despite having it up there and are clearly happy taking peoples' money which is a bit of a scummy thing to do.
It shouldn't work any differently from steam, obviously, caveat, this depends on what publishing platform you're using but they don't really do traditional installers these days they just upload the game folder after they've compiled it from the engine so it runs like a proper program. It grates on me that this is something which realistically should take five seconds which is the wonderful thing about modern software these days yet they'd rather sit there gaslighting their real customers about steam than just fucking upload the latest version.
The only real difference with itch is, there's no DRM, so when you download off their site you're just getting their files like a normal site as opposed to having to download some third party software. They technically have that apparently, but I've never touched it and don't plan to when the DRM free option is still available.
It could be that they just don't want people to pirate the game.
Gimme a sec...well, I found it's existence - 1.90 GB in winrar format and with no current seeders or leeches, uploaded on 29th December 2022 so perhaps they were trying to prevent that means of distribution.
Either way the entire operation seems amateur, which is understandable, but perhaps they'll make good on the whole operation or maybe it will go the way of Kickstarted in the Butt: A Chuck Tingle Digital Adventure like other Kotaku favoured game ideas.
