Europeans especially have had a very cringey tendency to refer to their girlfriend/boyfriend or even husband/wife as their "partner" even if they're straight. I've been baffled by it ever since I befriended some completely straight Brits on runescape like 15 years ago.
You can just start calling someone your wife. You can get a religious marriage and not involve the government. Then you present as man and wife, and in some states the government will eventually recognize that, if you even care.
I think, for men, it's better when the government isn't involved.
Ppl are always talking about how bad marriage is for men because of divorce, right? Or at least that's part of the reason and the most common route to male unhappiness. Well, if the government doesn't know, they can't punish me for it.

I've only heard people use that when they're not married but consider their relationship to be "more serious" than bf/gf
