I have to give the guys who came back disillusioned from Vietnam some leeway because there wasn't a large patriotic anti-war movement at the time. All they had was commies spitting on them at the airport or commies using them for their protests.
^ this. I have a couple of 'Nam vets in my family, and how they were treated across the board is why I'm anti-war now. They were told by the left that they were evil baby killers and spat on, and then the organizations that were supposed to support them (VA, VFW, etc.) told them that they hadn't been in a real war, so suck it.
"If they ever make me carry a rifle the first man I want to get in my sights is L.B.J."
To paraphrase another 'Nam protestor, "Ain't no Ruskkie ever called me privileged."
'nam protests were cringe since they didn't mind war, they just opposed fighting commies.
