If you're white, swampland = land with easier irrigation.
Via control of rivers, some of most productive farmland is reclaimed from what would be swamps.
Yup, Central Valley in California was swamps, and as you said all that water made for easy irrigation.
I mean, you could just look at the Netherlands, they not only reclaimed big parts of their country from teh sea, they turned former swampland into tons and tons of farm land. No wonder they protested hard against regulations.
Cool, yeah, I was thinking of the Mississippi.
