In the mandatory harassment training I had to take for my contract gig at MegaCorp it was made clear that not using them constituted workplace harassment.
Even if it's not "mandatory" it's taught by all the standard training modules and adopted as standard practice, so you can be fired for not going along with it.
I honestly try to avoid using pronouns at work. Mike checked in Mike's changes before the end of the day yesterday. Such changes fixed bug 311 but resulted in new bug 312.
Or often, Mr. So I will refer to Mr Smith instead of Mike. This is especially useful when people have "go by" names that you don't want to deal with. And then the traditional Ms for the misses. I do have to make that distinction, though. Honestly, they're probably just mr until I know them better, anyways, and no one has ever complained about that.
When I do have to address a username only, I do use "their". I dunno why. Just sunk in.
