With so few good new titles being released these days, especially by major studios, I figured I'd make a thread for everyone to share your favourite classic or older games, especially if they're lesser-known titles that others might have missed at the time.
I'll open with The Saboteur (2009), Mercenaries (2005) and Saints Row 2 ( The 2008 original)
These are mostly turn based strategy RPGs.
Sega: Warsong, Shining Force PS1: Ogre Battle, Tactics: Ogre, Vandal Hearts PC: Heroes of Might and Magic 2/3 (mentioned by other comments but so good it bears repeating)
Gonna throw in an MMO. EverQuest. A very popular server will be launching on May 22nd. A great chance to experience what it was like in its heyday.
Future Tactics was a little short but had an interesting mechanic that I haven't seen since. It's 3D and instead of a movement grid your character can move freely within their range, including platforming. To attack, you aim in first person and time moving crosshairs to get criticals or, for artillery, you have to time a top-down radar sweep to land where you want it.
All the terrain is destructible so you can strategically create or remove cover, bridges, etc, or knock enemies into pits, rivers, etc.
The setting and characters are interesting, but it's linear and levelling up is rather simple so I would love to see this explored further in a more complex game.
I actually gave up gaming, just can't resist a chance to list my favorite strategy games. Warsong is so good.
That EverQuest server is testing my resolve, though. It's called a time locked progression server. Rolls the game back to vanilla and also has cool loot rules. You won't have that "missed the boat" feeling that comes with starting an MMO late.
The EverQuest server is it official or private?
I been hitting UO free shards lately. Settled on a cozy no pvp one and Outlands. Wouldn't mind getting back at old school EQ if I don't have to pay.
It's an official server, requiring a subscription. Will be called Teek server. It has free trade/random loot ruleset from the Mischief server that was wildly popular. So named will drop their loot + additional random loot. And almost all no drop loot will be tradeable.
