For someone who hasn't seen this yet, would you recommend watching the theatrical first and comparing them? Or is this good enough to serve as a total replacement?
I'm a huge fan of David Lynch. His movies are so fantastic and he is a fantastic human. Even he says Dune is a fucking mess which he had no control over. (the editing in particular)
Just watched this the other day. Transforms the movie., especially the additional Thufir Hawat scene and the editing of the end. This has it over DUNC 1 & 2 any day of the week, in casting, art direction, music, characters and theme.
There's parts I like about this one and the newer split into two parts:
1984 version: think they did some characters better like Emperor and Chani. They also represented the spacing guild better.
Denis Villeneuve version: there is no question visually it is A LOT better and I prefer the soundtrack in this one. I also prefer Feyd in this one and actually like the change that Paul's sister remains unborn in the film, it adds more creepiness in that you aren't completely sure who is more in control.
I notice both don't have Paul and Channi's son killed, that is something different from the books and apart from Channi at the end, the newer version is more accurate to the book in the whole billions are gonna die by a Fremen jihad.

I would reverse order. The theatrical cut is a mess, but interesting for history and comparison. Watch it last.

Can't recall the other versions and I haven't seen the second part of the new Dune movie.
