They think they will make a god and it will deliver us to paradise. Google thought they could use machine learning to predict what buttons you were going to press in a video game and give you "negative latency". Amazon is run by a machine learning recommendation algorithm that is now hopelessly gamed by bots.
In this case they probably thought a machine learning solution would magically appear from the singularity and make their grocery store work.
