It's a sport somewhat similar to basketball (after looking it up, it's an accidental derivative of basketball). It's apparently quite popular among Commonwealth countries, such as OP's former home Australia.
Most popular women’s sport (and therefore sport by participation) in the country in fact. Same in NZ, and many other Commonwealth countries. Not sure where it sits in the UK, but it’s up there, too…
It was simply (no contact, no travel) women’s basketball, up until I think the 80s. Which is what it was originally intended as. Now it’s its own thing, in direct competition with actual women’s basketball for the same, let’s say, potential players (though netball is more popular).
There’s no men’s netball though. Only women’s and mixed.
There's two types. One is really fun and is soccer with basketball. The other looks the same but is so overly pedantic if a man dressed as a bee walked onto the field and started yodeling, I would assume it was in the rulebook.
... What the hell is Netball?

See above.
This is a fully professional league.
Think… The WNBA, but (relatively) much more popular, much less black, and with substantially fewer lesbians…
But yeah, it’s essentially women’s basketball with no contact, no travel rule, and fixed positions on the court.
If you’re a Centre, say, then you have to stay in the middle third of the court.
It’s immensely popular in Commonwealth countries. Most popular team participation sport by far.
