Australia/NZ-specific subreddits, in particular, were always absolutely fucking awful (everything from city subs, to politics, to finance), but this is worse than even during ‘Rona…
For context, this week the Australian Tax Office (ATO) essentially declared war on small (but not big) business, and said that they will use every tool at their disposal to squeeze every unpaid tax dollar out of said businesses, no matter what consequences that has for insolvencies, the economy, and hell, everything that follows that.
I am not kidding when I say that they literally said “Well, if this destroys more businesses than the GFC, that’s too bad.”
In a normal world, such an announcement would have been treated with… At least some degree of disgust, but not on Reddit. On Reddit, people were literally saying they wished that the ATO could employ lynch mobs. In the AusFinance sub (the irony), they were saying they hope small business owners kill themselves over this, because they clearly deserve to…
It’s pretty crazy to me, to see how toxic this discourse has become.
That place is… Well, it’s probably worse than I ever expected it would become, honestly. And that’s just with me lurking, not even wading back in to discussions again…
Its been like that for a while ever since they started hiring mentally unwell admins who'd selectively enforce the websites rules against dissenters against lefty politics.
I was perma'd from r/movies because someone was asking why writers/producers not caring about the IP or source material is a -bad- thing. I mentioned DEI and one of the subreddit mods went full sperg mode perma'd me then dropped some comment about KiA being full of shits.
I usually just lurk or stick to KiA(2) because you can at least get some decent discussions there about topics i'm interested in. The bigger ones are all modded by basement dwellers who have nothing else in their lives to do.
I gave up on r/KIA2 when it became clear that the tranny topic is too locked down to really discuss anything.
My account was banned by admins because I criticized the trans movement. They never gave a reason for my suspensions, but all of them happened shortly after I criticized it and the disastrous effects it's having on society.
Hey! Same here. I made a comment on a post in a default sub about how I'm not a "transphobe," because I'm not scared of people with mental illness.
Knew the ban hammer was coming as I typed it. Totally worth it.
